Hormone Function
Why Hormones Decline Hormones decline as we age every year after the age of 30. The human race has never lived as long as we are living today - just 100 years ago it was not uncommon for us to pass away in our 50's and 60's! Advances in healthcare, vaccinations, sanitation and food preservatives have dramatically increased life span! I now have patients in there 90's who travel, play golf, and enjoy sex, not necessarily in that order - but 50 is now just "middle age". Menopause has always occurred around age 50, and the glands that produce our hormones do not regenerate and continue to decline, producing fewer hormones with each passing year. As we age, it becomes increasingly important for both men and women to keep their hormones balanced to protect against fatigue, mood swings, disease, obesity and to enjoy an overall healthier sense of well being.
The Era of Natural Progesterone and Natural Estrogen is Here!Hormones that are made from plants are called Phyto-hormones. Phyto-estrogens refer to plant compounds with estrogen-like activity. Phyto-progesterones are plant componds with progesterone-like activity. There are thousands of plants that have estrogen-like and progesterone-like substances. In 1936, Japanese scientists discovered a species of wild yam. They extracted very valuable chemicals out of the root called Diosgenin and Sarasapogenin. These and soybean extracts are converted for USP grade progesterone in the United States. This product is almost chemically identical to the progesterone produced in our bodies. Hormone Confusion The problem starts here. Because bio-identical hormones are cheap and readily available the pharmaceutical companies take USP grade progesterone and turn it into Progestins and synthetic estrogens. These synthetics are then patented and can be sold for large amounts of money, but unfortunately they are not at all identical to our body's natural progesterone and estrogen and therefore can cause many side effects you will be reading about below. See for yourself - Progesterone vs Progestin - see the difference??:
Can you tell the difference between these 2 molecules??:
Switch to Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy for Menopause and Osteoporosis WHY? Because research shows a high risk of cancer in women who take synthetic hormones. The numbers were reported in the 3%-4% range! BUT.... In 1995 the Nurses Health Study published reports of up to 46% risk of breast cancer! (this was upheld by the WHI study - see www.whi.org. In addition to this a Million women Study conducted in the U.K stated a risk factor increase of 66% ) This is shocking and appalling to me. As a physician I have an ethical responsibility: "First do no harm" I felt then, as I do today, that synthetic hormones DO HARM a woman, causing many problems which you will read about on this page. My mission is to inform women and have my patients take Natural Hormones which will not harm their bodies but rather help them through PMS, the passage of Menopause, and Osteoporosis.
